Visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar is characterised by prolonged fever (>2 weeks), weight loss, anaemia, and splenomegaly. In India, visceral leishmaniasis is caused by the Leishmania donovani parasite and is transmitted by a sand fly (Phlebotomus argentipes).
